Sadie's Story: From Heart Surgery to Her New Home

Oct 25, 2026

Sadie came to Pet Central Helps as a Cocker Spaniel puppy with a very serious heart condition. Born in June to a puppy mill mama, Sadie had a severe heart murmur that prevented her from being sold. Thankfully, one of our contacts was able to bring her into our care.

After a visit to the University of Illinois cardiology team, we learned that Sadie had a life-threatening heart defect called patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). She needed surgery right away, and we turned to our community for help covering the $4,500 procedure.

That evening, we received a call from Tricia McVicker. She wanted to make a donation in honor of her mother, Brenda McVicker, who had three Cavalier King Charles Spaniels named Ruby, Rusty, and Emma Grace. All three had also received cardiac care at the University of Illinois.

Around the same time, our operations manager was grieving the loss of a beloved foster dog with a similar heart condition. As arrangements were being made for Sadie's surgery, we learned that Tricia had also lost her own dog just two weeks earlier.

Tricia understood the challenges of caring for a dog with cardiac issues, and she knew what Sadie might face. What started as a phone call to help cover Sadie's medical expenses turned into something more when Tricia decided she wanted to adopt her!

First, Sadie had to get through her surgery. Thankfully, the procedure was successful, and she was released from the University of Illinois to begin her recovery!

And then came the happy ending we'd all been hoping for. Sadie was adopted by Tricia, who had already played such a special part in her story.

Today, Sadie is recovering and enjoying life with her new family and her big brother, Coco! After everything this little girl has been through, it's wonderful to see her settling into her new home.

We're so grateful to Tricia for opening her heart and home to Sadie, and to everyone who donated, shared her story, and helped make her surgery possible. We're also honored to celebrate Brenda, Ruby, Rusty, and Emma Grace through this special connection.

Sadie's story is a wonderful example of why our medical fund is so important. While her surgery was successful, there will always be more animals who need specialized veterinary care and lifesaving procedures. If anyone is able to contribute to our medical fund, donations can be made through the Donate button on our homepage at petcentralhelps.org. Your support helps us continue providing the care our animals need.
